This is a RAFT (Role. Audience. Format. Topic.) Assignment that I had to do for U.S. History. My role is during the Civil War, I am a Northerner writing a letter to a friend in the South. Mine is about a young man who's family moved to the North and writes to his love down in the South.
Dearest Emma, the date is March 30th 1862. I miss seeing your beautiful face. Yesterday I learned that I am to be drafted into the Union Army. Has Alfred been drafted yet?
Since the war began, how has life back home been? Do Evan and Darren still go to school? How is it that the children entertain themselves? Is your way of getting food and news different from when my family and I lived there?
I can certainly say heading off to war is a frighting thought. I wonder about things like "What will the conditions of the Union Army be?" and "Why? Why was this war started?" but I know the answer to the last question. The North and South have disagreed about many subjects, mainly about the state of our nation.
I also have wondered if I will be seeing you again while I march through the South. Have any battles happened near your home and scared little Nora?
Please have hope and pray that I will survive this treacherous war so I may look upon your lovely face once again.
With all my love,
William Beacher.
